A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing and honoring the members of Delta Sigma Theta
2 Sorority, Inc., for more than a century of commitment to
3 social activism, academic excellence and civic engagement in
4 this Commonwealth on the occasion of "Delta Day" at the State
5 Capitol.
6 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta was originally founded in 1913 by
7 22 diligent collegiate women on the campus of Howard University
8 in Washington, DC; and
9 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta has since blossomed as one of the
10 preeminent service-based sororities, with more than 350,000
11 predominantly African-American initiated members; and
12 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta boasts 26 collegiate and alumnae
13 chapters within this Commonwealth, as well as more than 1,050
14 chartered chapters located around the world; and
15 WHEREAS, For more than a century, the sorority has been
16 guided by its mission, which includes the constructive
17 development of its members and public service with a primary
18 focus on the African-American community; and
19 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta realizes its mission by providing
1 an extensive array of public service initiatives through the
2 sorority's Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, including educational
3 development, economic development, international awareness and
4 involvement, physical and mental health and political awareness
5 and involvement; and
6 WHEREAS, Over the past 112 years, members of Delta Sigma
7 Theta have led countless initiatives addressing a variety of
8 crucial issues, including voting rights, affordable health care,
9 financial literacy, economic empowerment, support for
10 historically black colleges and universities, political
11 awareness and involvement, gender equality and racial profiling;
12 and
13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta's 2022-2026 quadrennial theme,
14 "Forward with Fortitude: Engaging Our Sisterhood, Empowering our
15 Communities, and Elevating Our Impact," is a reflection of the
16 sorority's values and principles; and
17 WHEREAS, Each year since 1989, Delta Sigma Theta members have
18 participated in various "Delta Days" at the nation's capitol,
19 the United Nations, state capitols, town halls and school boards
20 throughout the country in order to increase their involvement in
21 the policymaking process; and
22 WHEREAS, May 5, 2025, marks Delta Sigma Theta's annual "Delta
23 Day" at the State Capitol in Harrisburg where members from
24 across this Commonwealth come to connect with their legislators,
25 advance legislation and serve as a voice for others; and
26 WHEREAS, The women of Delta Sigma Theta continue to be
27 magnificent examples of servant leaders with an uncompromising
28 commitment to their communities, serving as the driving force to
29 carry on the mission of "Delta Day" at the State Capitol;
30 therefore be it
