A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing the week of October 5 through 11, 2025, as "National
2 Newspaper Week" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, Our nation's founders recognized, in their vision,
4 that a democracy depends upon the convictions and actions of an
5 informed public, and that its citizens must have access to the
6 most complete and accurate information about their community,
7 their nation and the world; and
8 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is the birthplace of our nation's
9 independence, and the freedom enjoyed by the people of the
10 United States, supported by the right to free speech and a free
11 press, is a treasured principle upon which this Commonwealth and
12 the United States thrive; and
13 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth was a pioneer in the nation's
14 newspaper industry, highlighted by the Pennsylvania Gazette, a
15 fledgling publication reestablished in 1729 by Founding Father
16 and publisher Benjamin Franklin that became the most successful
17 newspaper in the American colonies and shaped the political and
1 cultural landscape; and
2 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's newspapers have evolved through
3 the centuries to meet the increasing needs and challenges of a
4 diverse population to reflect the highest standards of
5 journalism and public service, accuracy and fairness; and
6 WHEREAS, Since 1940, the Newspaper Association Managers Inc.,
7 has sponsored and supported "National Newspaper Week," a
8 weeklong celebration emphasizing the importance of newspapers in
9 fostering improved community service, participation and
10 responsiveness in the everyday lives of citizens; therefore be
11 it
12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
13 week of October 5 through 11, 2025, as "National Newspaper Week"
14 in Pennsylvania; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge the
16 vital role played by the newspaper industry as a pillar of our
17 democracy and congratulate the Pennsylvania NewsMedia
18 Association and its membership and affiliates upon the
19 celebration of "National Newspaper Week" and for their role in
20 encouraging an active citizenry and an informed public; and be
21 it further
22 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
23 the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.
