                                     AN ACT
 1   Prohibiting for-profit entities from owning or managing
 2      hospitals and health systems in this Commonwealth.
 3      The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
 4   hereby enacts as follows:
 5   Section 1.   Short title.
 6      This act shall be known and may be cited as the Prohibiting
 7   For-Profit Hospitals Act.
 8   Section 2.   Definitions.
 9      The following words and phrases when used in this act shall
10   have the meanings given to them in this section unless the
11   context clearly indicates otherwise:
12      "For-profit entity."     The term includes a corporation,
13   limited liability corporation, limited liability partnership,
14   private equity, investment bank or hedge fund which operates to
15   generate revenue or profit for its owners, partners or
16   shareholders.
17      "Health system."    An entity owning and operating one or more
 1   hospitals, hospice agencies or nursing homes.
 2      "Hospital."   An institution licensed in this Commonwealth
 3   which is a general, mental, chronic disease or other type of
 4   hospital.
 5   Section 3.   Prohibition.
 6      A for-profit entity may not own or manage a hospital or
 7   health system in this Commonwealth.
 8   Section 4.   Applicability.
 9      The prohibition under section 3 shall not apply to a hospital
10   or health system owned or managed by a for-profit entity on the
11   effective date of this section.
12   Section 5.   Effective date.
13      This act shall take effect in 60 days.
