For many attendees, the unforgettable welcome home may once again become one of the defining moments of AirVenture week. The Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight will return to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh on July 24, bringing Vietnam veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. The flight is part of the annual Salute to Veterans activities during the 73rd annual Experimental Aircraft Association fly in convention, scheduled for July 20 through 26 at Wittman Regional Airport. The veterans will travel at no cost before returning to Oshkosh following Friday afternoon’s air show, where thousands of aviation enthusiasts are expected to greet them with cheers, applause, and long overdue recognition. Rick Larsen, EAA vice president of communities and member programming, called the Honor Flight one of the most memorable events of AirVenture each year. He said the experience not only honors Vietnam veterans for their service, but also gives attendees an opportunity to personally say, “Thanks and welcome home.” This marks the twelfth year the Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight has departed from AirVenture under the leadership of Missions of Honor, formerly known as Old Glory Honor Flight. Since 2009, the nonprofit has coordinated dozens of flights for veterans, including special missions to Pearl Harbor and Vietnam. Diane MacDonald, executive director of Missions of Honor, said the return to Oshkosh creates unforgettable moments for both veterans and spectators alike. She noted that the appreciation shown by the aviation community carries deep meaning for those making the trip. American Airlines will once again provide the aircraft, operated entirely by volunteer pilots and cabin attendants from the airline. For many veterans, the journey is about far more than travel. It is a moment of reflection, healing, and recognition that in some cases took decades to arrive.
