Governor Sherill wants the signage at MetLife Stadium to read “We are New Jersey New York" as opposed to “We Are New York New Jersey.” Crews have started modifying signs at MetLife Stadium to reflect these changes. Mikie Sherrill's office pushed FIFA and the host committee to make this happen. "I will always put New Jersey first, and I wanted to make sure the stadium hosting eight World Cup matches in our state did the same," said Sherrill. "We are thrilled to welcome soccer fans from around the world this summer, and this recognition helps ensure the experience is just as exciting and memorable for New Jerseyans as it is for our visitors." Tensions over the partnership have flared up in recent weeks. This week, FIFA agreed to let the joint host committee allow New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to ballot 1,000 tickets at $50 for games. Those tickets will go only to residents of that city, which led a spokesman for Sherrill to tell The Athletic that FIFA not caring about costs for Garden State residents isn't new. In addition, the NJ Transit system faced criticism when it first wanted to charge $150 for a round-trip ticket. These fares have recently been reduced due to the criticism. New Jersey officials felt that FIFA was treating New Jersey residents unfavorably in the handling of World Cup tickets, despite MetLife Stadium hosting multiple matches. Officials are also advocating for affordable tickets for New Jersey residents instead of the heavy focus on New York residents. U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer introduced legislation earlier this month that would call for the "Jersey Pride Tax Credit." If it passes, businesses selling Garden State-branded products instead of "I Love New York" gear in airports, train stations, and rest stops would get a 25% tax credit. The East Rutherford facility, MetLife Stadium, will host eight games, including the final. Four teams will train there during the tournament: Brazil, Senegal, Haiti, and Morocco. The first match is set for June 13 between Brazil and Morocco.
