Thu, May 28, 2026 New Century AirCenter Gets Grant For New Air Traffic Control Tower The $2.6 Million Federal Grant Will Help Replace World War II Era Tower Rep. Sharice Davids (D-Kan.) has announced a multi-million-dollar Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant for New Century AirCenter in Olathe, Kan., to improve and modernize operations, including airport safety for pilots and personnel – and to increase its capacity to manage a growing aviation demand. New Century AirCenter is the second busiest towered airport in Kansas. The federal funding for the grant was secured through an FY2026 appropriations package. It is part of a larger effort to support the airport and its continued economic growth in both Johnson County and the surrounding region. “The New Century AirCenter is a critical hub for business aviation, freight activity and regional economic development in the Kansas City metropolitan area,” Davids said. “New Century AirCenter plays a vital role in supporting jobs, commerce and connectivity across our region.” “This investment, which I voted for, will help ensure pilots, workers, and passengers are operating in a safer, more modern facility that can meet the demands of continued growth in Johnson County and the Kansas City metro area.” With more than 96,000 operations annually and roughly 120 aircraft, the New Century AirCenter ranks as the second busiest towered airport in Kansas. Additionally, it is home to the second-longest runway in the region – approximately 7,339 feet. New Century AirCenter was formerly known as Naval Air Station Olathe.
