David Brandes For Caisson Horses, A New Beginning; For Middleburg, The End Of An Era Features Erin Harty l May 25, 2026 ADVERTISEMENT Almost a year ago, after about a two-year absence during which officials addressed serious concerns about the horses in their care, the Caisson Detachment of the Army’s 3rd United States Infantry Regiment—better known as The Old Guard—resumed participation in funerals at Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia). Now the program is taking the next, major step toward improving the care of its horses, with with the Army’s planned purchase of the iconic Middleburg Training Center—a Thoroughbred racehorse training facility in Loudoun County, Virginia—as the new home and training venue for the 40-odd caisson horses that participate in military funerals. The training center is about 47 miles from Arlington. Built in 1956 by Thoroughbred breeder and philanthropist Paul Mellon, who lived in nearby Upperville, the 149-acre facility includes 11 barns, 220 stalls and a 7/8-mile racetrack and is an important part of the Thor
